James had rickets as a child and that caused some damage to his bone development. He also suffered from some mental handicaps because of it. He however was a kind and caring man. He never married, but lived independently after his mother died until a few years before his death.

James M. (Cowboy) Kearbey, 88, died on Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Mark Twain Caring Center at Poplar Bluff. He had been in poor health for several months.

He was born Jan. 8, 1917, in the Cane Creek Community of Butler County. He had retired from Van Halferty Feed Co. where he worked in the 1950s. He was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed fishing, music and his family. Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sparkman Cemetery with Rev. Tommy Hays officiating. Arrangements were made by Cotrell Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff.
