Sterling was the eldest son of Edward and Elender (Smith) Adamson. On his tombstone and his marriage license his first name is spelled "Sturlen," but his death certificate and most census records spell it "Sterling." In the 1880 census he is listed as divorced and is back home living with his parents. I can't find the marriage record, but the Greene County, MO archives has a record of a divorce finalized on 5 November 1879 between Sterling W. Adamson and his wife Louisa Adamson (no maiden name given), with the latter being awarded custody of their infant child (name and gender not listed). My theory is that his wife was Louisa Morriset, who was listed as divorced and living with her parents, siblings, and 2-year-old son Eddie Adamson in Linden Township, Christian County, MO in 1880.

Sterling married Sarah Ann Neill in Dade County, MO on 4 May 1884, and the couple had the following children: Fredie W., Hugh R., Athe M., Mirta A., Oren K., Thomas E., and Claud T.
