Levi served in the 71st Infantry, Company K, of the Illinois Volunteers from July to October 1862, during the Civil War. He was a life long resident of Franklin County, and a progressive farmer who built the first concrete silo in southern Illinois.
Levi first married Susanah P. Winn November 5, 1868. Two children, James Calvin Jones 1869-1875, and Alta May Jones Veach born 1880, were born to them. After Susanah's death January 22, 1881 he married Nancy Alice Bellamy on November 17, 1881. Their seven children are Clarence Elza born 1882, Nell Geneva born 1886, Bess Buelah born 1888, Monroe Palmer born 1891, Howell Sheridan born 1893, Herschel Baron born 1896 and Mary Alice born 1901. After the death of Nancy August 21, 1914 Levi married Mary "Mollie" Ward Cline Biby on January 6, 1919.
Levi passed away at age 83 years 10 months and 7 days.
