He was a Chief Boatswain's Mate on the USS Bennington (PG-4).
He was aboard the steel-hulled gunboat in the ship's gear locker when excessive steam pressure caused a boiler explosion on July 21, 1905.
He ran below deck to release the lashing that connected the ship to its anchor and allowed the sinking gunboat to be beached by the tug Santa Fe.
He was severely burned by breathing the scalding steam and died the next day at 25. He was buried in the Bennington Memorial section on July 23, 1905.
