Berta Gay (Mills) Kays passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on the evening of Wednesday, November 4, 2009. She reunited with her grandson, K.C. Kays, and other friends and family members who left their earthly lives before her. Born May 20, 1931, one of the twin daughters of Rudie H. and Mary D. Mills, she lived and worked in Lebanon for nearly seventy years. On December 18, 1949, Berta married Paul F. Kays, who passed away August 11, 2001. Mrs. Kays was a loyal and dedicated employee of Witham Memorial Hospital for more than thirty-five years. She worked as a Certified X-Ray Technician, having trained on the job and passing her certification test at the age of thirty, while working and caring for three children, and expecting her fourth child. Despite Berta working full time in the X-Ray Department and at one point serving as its Head Technician, she managed to be a homemaker and mother of four children. She was well known for her homemade meals, pie baking, canning and freezing of the many fruits and vegetables that she and her husband harvested for most of their fifty married years together. Berta devoted her life to the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, always thinking of them first before herself. Survivors include daughter, Paula "Jayne" Brickey (Jerry), Thorntown, sons, Kevin Kays and Paul Kays III (Libby), Lebanon, and daughter, Marlis "Colleen" McNabb, California. Other survivors include her nine grandchildren, Kreig (Crystal) Kays, Shamrenn (Tom) Plavcan, Jessica (James) Kiplinger, Tracey (Chad) Wethington, Christie McNabb, Jared Kays, Lauren McNabb, Jana (Zach) Foster and Jake Kays; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her friend and caregiver, Marcia Owens, who assisted with her care for the past three years. Besides Berta's husband, Paul, her twin sister, Betty Jean McIntyre, infant sister, Marie Mills, and grandson, K.C. Kays, predeceased her. Family and friends are invited to attend an informal Visitation/Memorial planned by her family to honor Mrs. Kays' life on Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Strawmyer-Drury Mortuary, 2400 North Lebanon Street, Lebanon, Indiana. An informal family service is planned at Oak Hill Cemetery at the conclusion of the Visitation/Memorial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in honor of Mrs. Kays may be made to the K.C. Kays Scholarship Fund c/o the Lebanon Educational Foundation or to Boone County Senior Services.
