Deceased Name: Gean Abbott
Gean was born on April 17, 1931, in Rock River, Wyo., to Opal Beatrice (Cowel) and Allen George Abbott. At the time, he was the sixth of eight children – four boys and four girls. The Abbott family was living in Rock River at the time of Gean's birth, as his father was working hauling coal there, during the Great Depression. The family would move back to Keenesburg later that same year.
His first eight years of school were spent at the Sunnydale School in Adams County. His teacher and principal was Bertha Heid, who later became the superintendent of Adams County Schools. She also had an elementary school in Thornton named after her. Gean would credit her as the one person who inspired him to go into education. He later attended his first three years of high school at Prospect Valley High School. His senior year was spent at Brighton High School, graduating with the class of 1949, where he and his brother, Gilbert, were cheerleaders for the Bulldogs.
After graduation, he attended Colorado A&M (later re-named Colorado State University) for 1 1/2 years. However, when the Korean War began, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served aboard the destroyer, The USS Sullivans, as a radio operator. After he finished his enlistment, he re-enrolled at Colorado A&M and graduated in 1958 with a bachelors of arts degree in education. During his college years, he married Lillian Armour and had a son, Gean Jr., in 1958. In 1963, he obtained his master's degree in educational administration from the University of Northern Colorado.
Gean' first teaching job was in 1959 for the Brule Public Schools in Brule, Neb., where he taught high school ccience. In 1962, he accepted a position in Wiggins, , again, teaching high school science. In 1965, he was promoted to principal of the Wiggins Elementary School. In 1968, he accepted a position as principal of South Elementary School in Brighton. In 1980, he completed his teaching career as principal of Southeast Elementary School in Brighton. Gean retired in 1980 after undergoing two open-heart surgeries in 1979.
Gean's first marriage ended in 1970. He later married Sally Vasquez Dec. 23, 1973. He spent his retirement years enjoying goose hunting with family and friends, and fishing with many of his family members, most especially his grandsons. His great retirement passion was golfing with many wonderful friends and family. He was past president of the Adams County Principals Association, a charter member of the Brighton Kiwanis Club, a 47-year member of Hudson Masonic Lodge #168 and Brighton Masonic Lodge # 78, AF & AM, a Colorado Consistory member, and an El Jebel Shrine member.
He and Sally have been married for almost 37 years, and have enjoyed traveling to every state in the union, including driving to Alaska and numerous trips to Mexico, and cruises to several countries. Twice every year, they would travel to their condominium in Fountain Hills, Arizona, (often with his grandsons) and enjoy the weather and the golfing. He always enjoyed his Navy Ship's reunions, which were held in several different states. He was so looking forward to next year's reunion in Waterloo, Iowa, the birthplace of the five Sullivan Brothers who lost their lives aboard the USS Juneau in World War II.
Gean left this earthly world Oct. 10, 2010, after losing his battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Gean and Donna (Trujillo); grandsons, Nathan and Allen, all of Brighton; sisters, Shirley Uhrich, of Loveland and Helen (Ray) Schmidt, of Mesa, Ariz.; sister-in-laws, Georgene Abbott, of Keenesburg; Jane Abbott, of Kiowa, Vivian Perales and Ruby Mora, of Denver; and brother-in-law, Ray Vasquez, of Colorado Springs, CO; as well as more than 34 nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert, Virl and Gilbert; and sisters Beverly Bodine and Hazel Cronk.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Oct. 13 at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. at the Brighton United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area 'B.'
Memorial donations may be made to the Gean C. Abbott Memorial Fund c/o Valley Bank and Trust, 4900 E. Bromley Lane, Brighton, CO. 80601. These donations will be dispersed to The Gean C. Abbott Memorial Scholarship Fund, The Brighton Kiwanis Club and The Harmony Angels Foundation.
