Son of Thomas and Mary "Polly" (Barrett) Lawson of Hawkins County, Tennessee.

Pvt. Stephen Lawson, Company L, 8th Tennessee Cavalry, Union Army, U.S. Civil War. Stephen enlisted on September 12, 1863 and served under Captain Humbert S. Rogers. His discharge papers on September 11, 1865 in Knoxville, Tennessee describe him as being 50 years old, 5'9"and having blue eyes, sandy hair and light complexion. His discharge papers were signed by Capt. H. S. Rogers and Capt. T. McDermott with no objection to his re-enlistment known to exist. Before the war, Stephen was a farmer in Greene County, Tennessee. In 1873 the Beersheba Congregation was added to the Paint Mountain Circuit of the Protestant Methodist Church. Stephen Lawson was among the first members at Circuit Meetings of this church.

His first wife was Catharine Freshour, daughter of John and Catherine (Mercer) Freshour. Stephen Lawson and Cathrin Freshour married on July 15, 1832 (date of bond #3377) in Greene County, Tennessee. They had nine children: Emaline, George, Martha, Elizabeth, Catharine, John, Mary, Sarah, and Lavina.

After Catharine's death Stephen married Rosie L. Keller, daughter of Bill and Martha (Lamb) Keller. They were married on August 6, 1892 in Greene County, Tennessee. They had one child, Claudia Belle Lawson. After Stephen Lawson's death, both his wife Rosie (Keller) Lawson and their daughter, Claudia, received military pension survivor benefits based on Stephen Lawson's service in the Civil War.

"I have entered Pvt. Stephen Lawson (Co. L Reg. 8) into the Civil War (Union) Soldier Database at the East Tennessee Historical Society, along with his burial location. According to Greeneville Veteran Records he never recovered from a leg injury he received being thrown from a horse."
