Ruth Bain, M.D., age 92, of Austin died June 23, 2011 in Tyler, Texas following a decade of graceful aging but declining memory. Born on March 12, 1919, Dr. Bain was a pioneer woman doctor in Texas. She was reared in Centerville, Texas, the ninth of eleven children of Mary Allie Williams Bain and Robert Nelson Bain, on a poultry and dairy farm, while her father served as Leon County tax assessor-collector. When she was twelve years old her father died suddenly and the family home burned down the same year. She learned the discipline of hard work at an early age, noting that she did not know people slept past sunrise until she went to college. Dr. Bain received a B.S. in Chemistry from Texas State College for Women (now Texas Women's University), in 1939 and an M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1942. Dr. Bain served on the staff of the University of Texas Health Center for three years and then entered private practice in Family Medicine in Austin. During over 39 years of private practice, she delivered over 1,000 babies and treated many three or more generation families. In 1987, she retired from private practice and served as Medical Director and then VP, Medical Affairs for Texas Health Plan (later PCA Health Plans of Texas) until she retired in 1990.

Dr. Bain was President of Travis County Medical Society, 1962-63, and Texas Medical Association, 1982-83. She was a delegate from TMA to the American Medical Association House of Delegates. Dr. Bain served on the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, 1979-82. Honors included Ruth Bain Day on March 20, 1979, declared by the Travis County Medical Society, highlighted by a television interview with Cactus Pryor and Barbara Miller and a proclamation from Mayor Carole Keeton McClellan (now Strayhorn). Other awards include: the first Physician of the Year Gold-Headed Cane Award by the Travis County Medical Society in 1989; Central Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1990; Distinguished Alumnus from both Texas Women's University and UT Medical Branch, Galveston in 1993; Texas Medical Association Distinguished Service Award in 1994. Civic activities included YWCA Board of Directors, Austin Chamber of Commerce, Advisory Board for Leadership Austin, and Westminster Manor Board of Directors.

Dr. Bain was an avid golfer with a weekend home at Lakeway for many years. One of her proudest personal achievements was the day she soloed to get a pilot's license. Dr. Bain was active for a number of years in Physician's Forum, a group for retired Austin physicians, with which she took a number of wonderful trips all over the world. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Austin for many years.

Preceded in death by siblings Harley, Ted, Katherine, Sam, Berta, Joe, John and two brothers who died at birth, Dr. Bain is survived by her sister, Louise Sinderson of Kerrville, Texas, sister-in-law, Jane Bain, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and many loving nieces and nephews. Her memory will be cherished by her family, friends, colleagues, and the community for her love and selfless service.

Funeral services are scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, at First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Texas followed by burial in the Centerville Cemetery. Although there will not be an open casket, public visitation will take place at the church, on the day of service, from 12 noon until 1:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Texas Women's University Foundation, the University of Texas Medical Branch, the Texas Medical Association Foundation, Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd, Tyler, TX 75701, or to the charity of your choice.
