Musician. Born Frederick William Green, he was a swing jazz guitarist noted for his sophisticated rhythm big band guitar style. In 1937, Count Basie went to one of Green's gigs and was an immediate fan. He offered him a job, Green excepted and for the next fifty years he was a pivotal fixture of the Count Basie Band. His guitar technique was to play only certain notes of each chord which gave a chunky rhythm sound without creating unnecessary harmonic presence to interfere with notes sounded by other members of the orchestra. He also performed and recorded with artist Benny Goodmen, Duke Ellington, Fats Walker and Harry James.
