Leone's father murdered her mother shortly after she was born. Her father eluded capture for the crime but 9 years later was accused of terrorist actions against the United States. He committed suicide shortly after capture.

Leone's surname was changed to Krembs after the realization that her father had been responsible for her mother's death.

She and her sister, Helen, were raised by her mother's sister in the Chicago area. Leone never married and lived much of her adult life with her first cousin Alma Cramer.

Leone and Alma were activists in the Democratic Party in the 1950's. Alma and Leone died in the same week in Chicago.
