[We see next to this HOWE gravestone another HOWE family: Simon H. Howe 1835-1911 and wife Harriette 1836-1914 & their 2 daughters Alice 1859-1860 and Annie 1871-1887 who died in childhood. And on the other side of this stone is Louis P. Howe 1858-1945 and India H. Howe 1860-1960. Simon must be the son of Samuel and Charlotte Howe. And Louis P. must be the son of Simon H. and Harriette Howe.]

1860 U.S. Census Marlborough, Massachusetts. There is a Samuel Howe age 60, living with the young family of Simon H. Howe age 24, wife Harriet Howe also age 24,and their children Lewis P. Howe 2, and Alice B. Howe 5 months old. Both Simon and Samuel have occupation: "shoe", income & property about $2,000-2,500.

1870 U.S. Census Marlborough, MA. Simon H. Howe & wife Harriet A. ages 34, a shoe manufacturer with real estate valued at $25,000 and personal estate at $50,000. They having living with them 11 year old Lewis P. Howe and 8 year old Charlotte A. Howe, plus 18 year old Clara L. Proctor.

1880 U.S. Census Marlborough, MA. "S. Herbert Howe" and wife Harriette E., shoe manufacturer, with children 22 year old Louis P., Charlotte A. 18, and Annie B. 8. They have two servants living with them.

1900 U.S. Census Marlborough, MA. Simon H. Howe and wife Harriett A. ages 64 are living with their son, Louis P. age 42 and wife Indiana H. Howe at 235 Pleasant Street. There is also a 69 year old female seamstress boarding there, plus an Irish servant age 27. Both Simon and Louis are listed as "manufacturers". Simon and Harriette have been married 43 years, 4 children, 2 living. Louis and Indiana are married 12 years with no children.

1910 U.S. Census Marlborough, MA. Simon H. Howe age 74 and wife Harriette are living at 29 Pleasant Street. They have a servant and a cook living with them also.

1920 U.S. Census Marlborough, MA. Louis P. Howe age 62 (no occupation) and wife India H. age 59 living at 235 Pleasant Street. Their friend Mildred Hight age 36 is also living there.

"(VI) SAMUEL HOWE, son of Abraham Howe (5), was born March 2, 1800. He learned the cooper's trade and early embarked in business, was very successful, and acquired considerable property. Retiring from business in 1842 he devoted the rest of his life to farming. He had a fine voice, and sang for years in the Unitarian church, of which he was a member. He had an open and generous disposition and an even temper, and was much beloved.
He died April 11, 1864. He married, October 8, 1822, Charlotte Howe, born August 10, 1800, and died March 30, 1839, daughter of Joseph and Eunice Howe (see sketch of Charlotte Howe family).

Children: 1. Charlotte A., married John Rice. 2. Clarissa, married Joseph Proctor. 3. Lewis A., married Jane Smith and Irene Cobb. 4. Simon Herbert, see forward."
