Peter Craven, a successful potter, was born around 1712-1715 and began a pottery shop in Colonial Orange County, now known as Randolph County. He is believed to have been born in New Jersey and migrated to North Carolina from Pennsylvania and on down through Virgina, settling down in 1750 in eastern Randolph County. He is revered as the Patriarch of the Craven family, descended from English lords and barons such as the Earl of Craven, Sir William Craven. His exact grave in Concord Methodist Church Cemetery in Coleridge, NC is unknown as in 1934, the location was lost after upgrade work in the cemetery along a fence boundary line. An inscribed monument memorializing his life and status as family patriarch was placed in 1978 during the 34th annual Craven family reunion. His wife's name is unknown but he had six sons.
