Betty J. Mayes Uhl, 82, of Luna Pier passed into the loving arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, June 24, 2011.
Born November 12, 1928 in Monroe, Michigan, she was the daughter of Sterling B. Mayes and Marguerite L. Gates. Betty married Philip (Skip) Uhl of Toledo, Ohio on May 10, 1947 at St. Mary's Church in Monroe. Rev. John McNamara officiating.
Surviving family members are: husband, Philip; children, Peggy (Bruce) Ray, Denver, Co.; Philip Uhl Jr., Honolulu, Hi.; Judith Anne (Richard) Tuma, Bloomfield Hills, Mi.; Paula Uhl (Burt) Snyder, Honolulu, Hawaii; Patricia (Michael) Savona, Toledo (Fostoria and Lakeside,) Ohio; David (Elizabeth) Uhl, Denver, Co.; Theodore Uhl, Luna Pier, Mi., eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Robert Mayes, his wife, Mignon, and their daughter Jean, brother Ted Mayes, his wife Mary and their son Ted Mayes Jr., brother David Mayes and granddaughter, Angelica Marie Savona.
Betty was educated in Monroe Public Schools and spent most of her working life at area arts and crafts shows. She became a member of Point Place (Ohio) Arts and Crafts Group in the 1980s, but later went on her own drawing and designing her own greeting cards, writing poetry and short stories. Her numerous oil paintings have been sold over the years at a gallery in Lakeside, Ohio. She has won awards for her sculpting ability. She published her own cartoon books on family jokes and sold them at her arts and crafts shows. She made hundreds of hats, doll clothes, baby clothes and closet accessories.
She did a series of lighthouse paintings that were published in a Hawaiian based publication "Island Christian Guide", in 2005. She was active in St. Joseph Catholic Church Mothers Guild and spent eight years in St. Joseph's choir. Selling crafts from the Labor Day Festival Fancy Booth was a favorite annual job.
In Luna Pier, she was a recording secretary for the planning commission and was historian for Luna Pier Community Improvement Association. The history of Luna Pier was her specialty. She loved Luna Pier and all the hard-working people who helped make it a wonderful place to live.
Her daily prayer was that all of her loved ones would know and love and serve our Lord so we may all enter into God's kingdom to live forever with Him.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at St. Joseph's Church, Erie. Cremation has already taken place.
