Early Day Rose Queen Mourned

Joan Hadenfeldt Woodbury, the second official queen of Pasadena's famed Tournament of Roses, is dead at 97.

Mrs. Woodbury was 34 and married when she reigned over the parade Jan. 1, 1907. Her death came Thursday in Santa Monica Hospital.

Mrs. Woodbury was the wife of Elmer Woodbury, part owner of the La Casa Grande and Maryland Hotels in Pasadena, when she was queen.

"It was a wonderful experience being Rose Queen," Mrs. Woodbury once recalled. "God has been good to me."

Outstanding women were selected by the Tournament to serve as queen from 1905 until 1930 when students of locals schools began competing for the regal honor.

Mrs. Woodbury rode down the parade route on a float covered with purple bougainvillea and gold chrysanthemums. "My husband and I designed the float,' she once recalled. "It was beautiful."

In those days, the parade was followed by chariot races instead of the new celebrated Rose Bowl football game – forerunner of all post season grid events. Her souvenir pin of the 1907 event had an engraving of the chariot races surrounded by roses, each with a small diamond in the center.

She was accustomed to the role of queen when she arrived in Pasadena from San Francisco. She was queen at six different events during her lifetime, but not once did she have to compete for the title. She was always chosen by someone, she recalled.

Her series of royal reigns began when she was 11, when she reigned as Queen of the May at Woodward's Gardens in San Francisco, the Disneyland of its day. That was in 1884.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Woodbury was also the oldest living former Rose Queen. She was also active in the Past Rose Queen Association, which annually holds a luncheon reunion. Mrs. Woodbury had attended these reunions every year at Perino's Restaurant and the past three years at the Occidental Towers Restaurant. The event was not held in 1968, however, had it been, Mrs. Woodbury planned to attend.

Mrs. Woodbury's husband died in 1946. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Henry Wilcoxon; a sister, Wanda Hadenfeldt Malone of San Francisco; three granddaughters and one grandson.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills.
