Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A clerk in a bookselling firm in Chicago, Illinois, he enlisted in the Union Army in August 1862 as a Private in Company H, 88th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, but was commissioned Captain and commander of the unit on September 4, 1862. After leading his men in the field he was assigned as a judge advocate for court martial duty while the Union Army was occupying Nashville, Tennessee. He was soon tabbed to serve as an Acting Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Alexander M. McCook, who commanded the XX Corps in the Army of the Tennessee. General McCook shouldered much of the blame for the Union defeat at the September 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, and was relieved of his command. When that occurred Alexander McClurg was assigned to the staff of Brigadier General Absalom Baird. On February 29, 1864 he was officially mustered out of the 88th Illinois Infantry, and mustered in as a Lieutenant Colonel of US Volunteers. In April 1864 he was named as Adjutant General of the XIV Army Corps, commanded by Major General John M. Palmer. After General Palmer resigned in August 1864 and Major General Jefferson C. David assumed corps command, Lieutenant Colonel McClurg was assigned as his Chief of Staff, and served in that duty until the end of his service, which happened upon his honorable muster out on September 9, 1865. On September 18, 1865 he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for “gallant and meritorious services during the war”. He returned to Chicago, and returned to the bookselling company he was employed with pre-war. He would eventually rise to assume control of the business, which became the A.C. McClurg and Company Publishers in 1886. He passed away in 1901 while vacationing in Florida.
