MERRILL H. ACKER WORKED FOR BOTTLING COMPANY
A prayer service for Merrill H. Acker, 78, formerly of 435 S. Hamilton St., will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church with the Rev. Theodore A. Crosby, associate pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Mr. Acker, Miller Road, LaFargeville, died Friday at Merrill Gardens, Banner Hospital, Mesa, Ariz.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Acker worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Co., beginning in 1948 as a route salesman and retiring in January 1988 as a refrigeration technician.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing and boating and was a life member of American Legion Post 61, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1400 and North Side Improvement League. He bowled in many leagues in the city, including the Merchant League at Pla-Mor Lanes.
Born Jan. 11, 1926, in Harrisburg, Pa., a son of William and Mary Archer Acker, he was educated at Copenhagen and Adams high schools.
He was employed with the 7-Up Co. for a year before being drafted into the Army in March 1944. He served in central Europe and the Rhineland with the 554th Engineer Pontoon Bridge Company and was discharged in April 1946.
He married Beverley J. Gray on Aug. 23, 1947, at St. Cecilia's rectory, Adams. The couple spent summers at Montana Shores, Three Mile Bay, and winters in Mesa.
Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, Steven J. and Kathy, Gilbert, Ariz.; a daughter, Mary Lou Tabolt, LaFargeville; three sisters, Arletha Waldron, Lowville, Jean Howcroft, Macedon, and Rosemary Diefendorf, Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, Keith Acker, Avon, and Earl Burnham, Baldwinsville; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, William, was killed in a plane crash in Detroit on Aug. 16, 1987. A brother, Francis Acker, and a sister, Muriel LaRose, also died before him.
