Duke Mennell was born in England on 8 May 1810. When his parents immigrated to America in 1817, Duke stayed behind with his grandfather. In 1823, when he was 13 years of age, he immigrated to America with his two uncles, Jesse and William Welburn to rejoin his family.

Duke acquired a fair common school education and was able to assist in the development of the first farm owned by the family in Grafton, Lorain, Ohio.

On June 23, 1835, Duke married Rachel Curtis. They had eight children together. Rachel died on Sep 29, 1858. Duke married a second wife, Mary A. (Hardy) Johnson. They had four children.

Duke Mennell was an active democrat until the Civil War and then became republican. He was honored by such offices as township trustee and was a man valuable to his community in may ways.
