Dock Allen was born into slavery in Georgia. He ran away from the plantation he was enslaved on in Alabama when he was a young man and was subsequently freed by his master. He was a cabinet maker, living and working in Montgomery, Alabama for the remainder of his life. He and his wife Eliza had a large family.
