Carolyn was born in 1919 to Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Humphrey in Junction City, Kansas. She was the granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Vance Humphrey the great-granddaughter of Judge and Mrs. James Humphrey.

Carolyn attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri and the University of Kansas. During WWII she became employed by the US Civil Service and was attached to the US Air Force. Just prior to her retirement in 1970 she was a procurement analyst for Procurement and Production Division of the Minuteman Missile Project at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California. At various points in her career she had been associated with the Air Force at installations in locations such as Okinawa, Japan, Anchorage, Alaska, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Carolyn had two sisters, Miss Barbara Humphrey (1917-1974) and Mrs. Jean Humphrey Proffitt (1920-2012).

Carolyn was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1971 to receive care near her sister, Jean. Carolyn passed in 1972 and donated her body to the University of Michigan Medical School for scientific research.
