U.S. Congressman. Born near Abbeville, South Carolina, he graduated from the University of Georgia in 1852, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to be a lawyer in private practice. During the Civil War, he served as a Private in the Confederate Army. After the war, he was a solicitor of the eighth judicial circuit of South Carolina, (1876-80) and judge of the eighth judicial circuit of South Carolina, (1881-86). In 1887, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth and Fifty-first Congresses, serving until 1891. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 67 in New York City.
