Three years later he married Geneva Lee Wareham on Jan. 23, 1937, likely in Henry County. They had four children together. In 1940, Cody enlisted in the National Guard and became active soon after once the US entered WWII. During the war, he attended jump school and was a paratrooper instructor stateside. He deployed to France for a few months before the end of the war, but it is not believed that he saw combat.

Upon his return home, he joined the railway police. He worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railway as a guard for a short time while living in Kansas City, KS in 1947. Between 1951-1957 the family resided in Hoisington, KS where his sons attended school. Sometime after this he moved to the St. Louis Area, living in Brentwood for several years.
