US Congressman. He was a blacksmith by trade when he moved to California, in 1852 and engaged in mining in Nevada County. Elected county recorder of Nevada County, he served (1869-71), then moved to Ventura, California, in 1874, engaged in agricultural pursuits and was elected the first California State President of the Farmers' Alliance, in 1891. He organized the People's Party of California and was delegate to the People's Party National Convention in 1892. In 1893, he was elected as Populist to the Fifty-third Congress, serving until 1895. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed agricultural pursuits until his death at age 85 on his ranch in Ventura, California.
