The D.M.W.V. has received word that one of our loyal members has passed away. Mrs. Isabel Frances Kenny, age 90, of Niles, Michigan died March 3, 2007, following a brief illness. According to her obituary, "Mrs. Kenny was born July 5, 1916, in Hammond, Indiana to Joseph A. and Mary J. Pahler Carey." After teaching for a while, she became a social worker for Brandywine Public School. "Her greatest interest was helping children succeed. She retired from Brandywine in 1981." Besides being a member of the D.M.W.V., "Mrs. Kenny was a member of the DAR and Society of Mayflower Descendants, Eleventh Generation. She enjoyed reading mysteries and did some writing in that genre. She also enjoyed genealogy, and was an artist in oils and acrylic."

Isabel Kenny joined the D.M.W.V. on July 31, 1991. Her ancestor and Mexican War veteran was William H. Thornton, Private, Co. E, 8th Regt., Missouri Infantry. Sympathy from the D.M.W.V. goes to her family of two sons, one granddaughter and 3 great-grandchildren.

NILES - Mrs. Isabel Frances Kenny, 90, of Bond Street, died at 9:23 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in Silverbrook Manor, Niles, following a brief illness. Mrs. Kenny was born on July 5, 1916, in Hammond, IN, to Joseph A. and Mary J. (Pahler) Carey, and came to Niles as a child, living here the rest of her life. She was graduated from Niles High School in 1933, and served many years as a legal secretary for Berrien County and for local law office. In 1964 she earned a bachelor's degree in education from Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo) and was employed as a teacher by Brandywine Public Schools, Niles. She continued her education at Western, earning a master's degree in social work, and became a social worker for Brandywine. Her greatest interest was helping children succeed. She retired from Brandywine in 1981. She was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church, Niles, and held memberships in professional associations related to her vocation. She was also a member of the Rebecca Dewey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of Mayflower Descendents, Eleventh Generation. She enjoyed reading mysteries, and did some writing in that genre. She also enjoyed genealogy, and was an artist in oils and acrylic. On November 21, 1940, in Saint Mary Catholic Church she was married to John Francis Kenny, who preceded her in death on March 2, 1995. She was also preceded in death by a son, Brian, who died in infancy, and by her brothers, Richard and William Carey. Surviving family includes her sons, John I (Patricia) Kenny Jr. of Sunfield, MI, and Timothy J. Kenny of Niles; granddaughter, Amber Kenny, and great-grandchildren, Killian, Tyler and Sophia; and many nieces and nephews. The memorial Mass for Isabel F. Kenny will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17 (Saint Patrick's Day), in Saint Mary Catholic Church, Niles, by the Rev. David Otto of the parish and the Rev. William T. Melody of Notre Dame, IN. The family will gather earlier for committal rites at Calvary Cemetery, Niles. There will be no visitation. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Kenny may be made to the donor's choice, or to The Children's Trust Fund of Michigan (for prevention of child abuse), Post Office Box 30037, Lansing, MI 48909. Arrangements were made by Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.
