Excerpted from the Mount Vernon Register News. Mr. Shurtz was born in Blissville Twp. to Andrew J. and Mary Elizabeth (Thomas) Shurtz. On June 13, 1912 he married Georgia Fairchild in DuQuoin, IL. Mr. Shurtz was a retired farmer and one of the county's best known men. He served on the Jefferson County Board for 16 years and was chairman of that board three times. He was a member of the Waltonville High School Board for nine years and had served as board president. He also served on the grade school board at Waltonville for several years. Mr. Shurtz was a member of the Modern Woodmen and the Masonic Lodge of Ashley. He was also a member of the Pierce Chapel Missionary Baptist church.
