Noted sociologist. Earned his BS, MA and PhD at the University of Chicago. Taught at the University of Chicago, University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of California at Berkeley, as well as serving in visiting professorships at other American and European universities. President of the American Sociological Association in 1969. Authored many books, including Higher Civil Servants in American Society (1949), Social Science and the Distrust of Reason (1951), Work and Authority in Industry (1956), Max Weber: An Intellectual Protrait (1960), Nation Building and Citizenship: Studies On Our Canging Social Order (1964), Kings or People: Power and the Mandate to Rule (1978), Force, Fate and Freedom: On Historical Sociology (1984), From Berlin to Berkeley: Geerman-Jewish Identities (1986): Embattled Reason (1988, 1989); and, Unsettled Affinities (1993), edited by John Bendix.
