U.S. Congressman. Born in Ellicotts Upper Mills, Maryland, he moved to New York, in 1803. Employed as an accounting clerk with the Holland Land Company, he was a member of the New York State Senate, (1819-22) and a member of the council of appointment, (1820-21). In 1827, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth Congress and served until his resignation that same year. He was appointed resident agent of the Holland Land Company, serving (1827-37). He then retired from active business pursuits to devote his attention to extensive land interests, until his death at age 62 in Batavia, New York.
