U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to Kent County, Michigan, in 1865, he attended the public schools and engaged in farming. He graduated from the University of Michigan, in 1887, from Eureka College Illinois, in 1889 and was superintendent of schools in Grand Rapids, Michigan, (1890-98) He graduated from Heidelberg University Ohio, in 1904, was president of Toledo University, in 1904, was principal of schools in Toledo, Ohio, in 1905 and also engaged in farming. In 1921, he elected as a Republican to the Sixty-seventh Congress, serving until 1923 and was elected to the Sixty-ninth, Seventieth, and Seventy-first Congresses, serving (1925-31). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he relocated to Indiana and lived in retirement until his death at age 82.
