US Congressman. Elected to represent Indiana's 4th and 5th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1849 to 1851, and 1861 to 1871. Also served as a Member of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1845, and in 1852 he ran as a Free Soil Candidate for Vice President of the United States.
