Harry J. Ferguson, Sr., 81, of Barratt Dr., died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born in the Bronx, he was the son of the late Emma J. Ferguson Bonesteel and the stepson of the late Clarence Bonesteel. He attended PS 4 and 8 in the Bronx and then moved to Troy in 1940 where he attended PS 10 and 14. He received his high school diploma from Niskayuna High School as part of the 2001 Operation Recognition Program. Harry was an apprentice machinist with the D&H Railroad in Colonie before entering the U.S. Marine Corps serving in China as a tank driver. Upon his honorable discharge, he began working as an apprentice architectural draftsman for Evenson and Davis for two years. He later worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Green Island for 33 years, retiring in 1981. After his retirement, with his wife, he owned and operated Mickie-Joes Restaurant in Waterford for 10 years. Harry was involved in many organizations. He was a Third Degree Knight with the K of C Council 237 in Waterford, a veteran member of the State Guard, a charter member of the VFW and was instrumental in the formation of Waterford Memorial Post 5800 in Waterford. He held many offices at the post including commander from 1973 to 1974. He assisted in the formation of the post Honor Guard, Color Guard and Firing Detail. He was a member of the Troy Marine Corps League, First Marine Division Assoc., Marine Corps Engineer Assoc. of NC, the American Legion Charles J. Brady Post in Waterford and an honorary member of the Battle of the Bulge #49 Association. Harry enjoyed and could be seen marching in and helping with several parades over the years and was a past grand marshal of the Waterford Memorial Day Parade. He was the coordinator of the Rensselaer County monthly "Honor a Deceased Veteran" Ceremony for 12 years, never missing a ceremony. He worked on various committees with the VA Hospital, Rock for Tots, and with the fundraiser for the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. Harry was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford and served as an usher for many years. Surviving is his wife, Julia Angley Ferguson, who he married on October 23, 1949 in Troy; also his children and their spouses, Harry J. Ferguson, Jr. (Mary Ellen Grovenger), Deborah Bradt (William) and Alfred Ferguson (Kim Smith). He was the grandfather of Kelly Ferguson Hindes (Kelly Russo), Dr. John Ferguson (Andrea Gardner-Bixler), Justin Ferguson, William, Bradt, Jr. (Danielle), Christine Bradt (David Keis), Jessica Bradt, Ashley Ferguson (Darrell Rozicki); and the great-grandfather of Olivia, Peyton, Macyn and Camden Bradt, Cassandra and Marissa Hindes and Mia Rozicki and soon to be born a new Rozicki great-grandson. Harry was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Sadie Marie Rozicki; and his brother, Alfred Ferguson, who died on July 27, 1944 at Normandy and whose grave he visited in France in 2000. Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rte. 32), Waterford, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment with military honors will be in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 3 to 8 p.m. Those who wish may make contributions to St. Mary of the Assumption Church Restoration Fund in care of the funeral home office. Harry's family would like to express their appreciation to Community Hospice of Saratoga with special thanks to Sandy, Robin, Helen and Karen.
