He was born on his parent’s farm, which was called Steenskka, in Haps, Holland, in 1859. Antoon worked on the railway line from Germany to Holland. He first settled in Wanroij, Holland, where he met and on January 26, 1891, married Theodora Verberk, born 1864. Theodora was an only child and inherited her parent’s fruit farm in Bergen, Holland. They lived on this farm and Antoon was a wooden shoemaker. He liked listening to stories about America and he started reading about it. Antoon decided to sell the farm and come to America. His family thought he had “wild ideas” and thought he was silly to come to America at the age of 50 with a wife and 8 children. But he always had a longing for new things. They boarded the S. S. Nordam from Rotterdam in April of 1912. After landing in new York they boarded a train, and it is said that Antoon left the train to get food and water for his wife and children. While he was gone the train left the station and Antoon had to board another train. He got back together with his family in Chicago. Theodora was unable to speak English so she could not explain to the conductor that her husband was not on the train. They bought a farm in Appleton, WI, and lived there until 1915. They moved to Minnesota and bought a farm in Cannon City on September 30, 1915. They ran this farm until April 1, 1944, when their son, Martin, and his wife, Emily, bought it. Martin and Emily lived on the farm and in 1972 Martin passed away. In 1974 Martin’s son, Donald, an his wife, Pat, bought the farm and it is still in the family. Antoon and Theodora had 12 children. Two boys and 2 girls died in infancy. Hermina married Adrian Maas. They had 8 children. Henrietta married Albert Schiks. They had 3 children. They had 3 children. Johanna married Harry Hubers. They had 5 children. Libertha married Peter Solyntjes. They had 4 children. Petronella married Carl Olson. They had 3 children. Marie married John Ernste. They had 10 children.
