Giles served in the Confederate States of America Army:
CUNDIFF, GILES: Born in Franklin County VA 15 Jan 1842. Farmhand, age 18 , Union Hall Post Office, Franklin County during 1860 Census. Enlisted at John Pasley's 24 July 1861 as a Private in Company E, 58th Virginia Infantry. Admitted to Gordonsville Hospital with scurvy 13 June 1863; transferred to Richmond Hospital 14 June 1863; returned to duty. Present until captured at Spotsylvania Court House 12 May 1864; sent to Point Lookout and Elmira; released 30 June 1865. Died 3June 1909; buried at Old Bethel Church Cemetery, Franklin County.

According to Jubal Early Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, Giles was wounded and captured at Spotsylvania Court House on May 18 1864. He was sent to Elmira Prison in New York and was released 30 June 1965.
