Virginia L. Stevens, 92, of LaPorte, died Monday, June 20, 2011, at Golden Living Center-Fountainview in LaPorte.

She was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Findlay, IL, to Daniel and Reta (Wright) Rose.

Virginia had been principal of Hailmann Elementary School and retired from LaPorte Community Schools. She was a member of First Christian Church of LaPorte, National Elementary Principals Association, AAUW (past president), Delta Kappa Gamma, National Teachers Association, and Indiana Association of Retired Teachers. She was a Master Gardener with the Terra Verda Garden Club. Virginia had received her bachelor's degree from the University of Indianapolis and master's degree from Northwestern University.

On Aug. 12, 1963, in Rochester, IN, she married Delbert D.Stevens, who preceded her in death Dec. 6, 2010.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.

She is survived by nephews Thomas (Nancy) Rose, Roger (Sandy) Rose, Carl (Karen) Rose, Barry (Christina) Rose, Robert (Mary) Rose, and Scott (Laura) Barlag; nieces Rachel (Rick) Rose Wyatt, Paula (James) Rose Black, Susan (Tom) Rose Smith and Debra (Dale) Rose Hamilton; and sister-in-law Roberta Stevens Barlag.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 25, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte. Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Carl Rose officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter, 2855 W. Ind. 2, LaPorte, IN 46350.
