Services for Ruby F. Bateman, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Kaneville United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Hyesung Hong, pastor, and the Rev. David Bateman, cousin of Mrs. Bateman and pastor of the United Church of Christ, Rolo, Ill., will officiate.

Born Dec. 20, 1916, in Hersher, Ill., to William and Mary (Nee Alnora) Markham, she passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva. Having battled kidney failure for many months, she was released in peace from the loving care of her family to the eternal care of her Heavenly Father. Interment will follow the services, in Blackberry Cemetery, Elburn.

Mrs. Bateman's family had lived in various Illinois cities, including Big Foot, Hebron, St. Charles and Wayne.

Upon the death of her mother, Ruby went to live with her sister, Lottie Reynolds. She was married to her first husband, Sherman 'Russell' Splain on July 26, 1934, and the couple lived in both Milton and Detroit, Ill., until moving to Aurora where Sherman passed away in 1964. Later she moved to Elburn when she married her second husband, Joseph Bateman.

Mrs. Bateman was a hard worker all of her life. She had been employed as a school janitor in Detroit, Ill., and worked at Walker's Laundry in Aurora.

For fun, she had also worked as an elevator operator and hat check girl at the Sky Club atop the old Leland Hotel in Aurora. She had also been employed at Sanders Tool and Die Company in Aurora as well as the Stoner Company and Standard Grigsby, both munitions plants, during the war years. In Elburn, she had worked as a waitress at her daughter's restaurant and also at National Electronics while helping her husband on the family farm. In later years when Joe became ill, Ruby took over all of the farm responsibilities, including cattle, grain, chickens and pigs, and managed them all.

Mrs. Bateman was also a member of Kaneville United Methodist Church and the 'Lunch Bunch' which she greatly enjoyed.

Surviving are her sons, Russell J. Splain and Robert (Suzanne) Splain, both of Elburn; daughters, Pat (Steve) Holper of Paw Paw, Ill., Janet (Ron) Long of Tennessee and Shirley (Charles) Ward of Durand, Mich.; nieces, Louise (Harry) Stevenson of Seneca, Ill., and Bernice Gibson of Elgin; stepson, Fred (Melody) Bateman of Maryland; sister, Marion 'Marie' Pritchard of Mississippi; 24 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Barb Ostrom and Nancy Lawhorn; her husbands, Sherman Splain and Joseph Bateman; sisters, Cora Markham, Myrtle Markham, Hazel Anderson, Blanche Robinson, Edith Williams and Lottie Bateman; brothers, William, Russell, Glenn, Frank, Benjamin, Lester and John Markham; and niece, Dorothy Kornevger.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church.
