PEOSTA, Iowa -- James L. "Jim" Collins, 78, of 14699 Ryan Road, Peosta, died at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2011, at home surrounded by his family after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at Holy Family Church, New Melleray, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Roy and Katie (Laughlin) Collins. He married Darlene Decker on April 4, 1959, at St. Joseph's Church, Key West.

Jim farmed in the Zwingle and Bernard area until his retirement in 1999, but even after retirement, farming still was a big part of his life.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Jim loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and attending their ballgames. He loved watching western movies and baseball, especially the Cincinnati Reds. He also loved gardening and was very proud of his potatoes, which he loved sharing with everyone.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene; five daughters, Janice (Mike Lacher) Mausser, of Le Claire, Monica (Mark) Redmond, of Bernard, Susan (Terry) Reeg, of Dubuque, Lisa (Matt Gruenke) Collins, of Marion, and Carla Collins, of Dubuque; grandchildren, Ryan Mausser, Eric, Casey, Connor and Reilly Redmond, Colin and Hannah Reeg; a great-grandchild, Berkley Mausser; brothers, Loras (Catherine) Collins and Ray (Pat) Collins; brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Callista Decker, Phyllis Decker, Vince and Evie Decker, Hubert and Liz Decker, Cletus and Monica Thielen, J.J. and Erma Decker, Louis and Darla Decker, Harvey and Charlene Decker, Virgil and Melita Hansen, Fran Decker, Mark and Bernie Giese and Ken Decker; godchild, Marilyn Lawler; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Dave Mausser; and brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Mary Decker and Ray Decker.
