South Carolina Governor. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the South Carolina Militia, seeing action under Generals deKalb, Gates, Marion and Greene. After the war, he built a rice cultivation farm, served as Tax Collector of St. Paul's Parish, South Carolina, (1785-86) and as Justice of the Peace, (1786-90). He was a member of South Carolina House of Representatives, (1787-89), South Carolina Senate, (1794-99) and South Carolina Comptroller General, (1799-1804). In 1804, he was elected as a Democrat Republican the 42nd South Carolina Governor, serving until 1806. After his term, he again served in the South Carolina House of Representatives, (1806-09). In 1809, President James Madison appointed him as the 3rd Secretary of the Navy, serving until 1812. As Secretary of the Navy, Hamilton was instrumental in the creation of naval hospitals. Retiring from politics, he lived on his plantation until his death at age 53. The U.S. Navy destroyer USS PAUL HAMILTON DDG-60 and the town of Hamilton, Georgia, are both named in his honor.
