Poinsettia Rancher, Horticulturalist. Upon becoming president of the family ranch in 1963 located in Encinitas, California, Paul Jr hired a staff of scientific and marketing professionals that enabled the ranch to take the poinsettia from a field plant to a highly coveted potted plant which today is a symbol of the Christmas season equal to mistletoe and holly. Joel Robert Poinsett, America's ambassador to Mexico introduced the plant to the U.S. in 1928 which was native to the Taxco region of the country. Paul's father, Paul Ecke Sr. developed the first poinsettia that grew successfully in an indoor pot in 1920. In June 2001, Paul Jr. received the Liberty Hyde Bailey Award, the highest honor bestowed on individuals in North America by the American Horticulture Society. Pancreatic cancer took his life at his residence in Encinitas. A memorial service was held at the Magadalena Ecke Family YMCA attended by some 1,700 local residents and the county's top political leaders.
