US Senator. Graduating from Yale College in 1777, during the Revolutionary War, he served as a Lieutenant in 2nd Connecticut Regiment, Continental Army. After the war, he studied law, admitted to the bar in 1779 and commenced to practice law in Tinmouth, Vermont. He was a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of the Vermont State Supreme Court. In 1797, he was elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Isaac Tichenor, serving until 1803. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives and Chief Justice of Vermont. He also was a professor of law at Middlebury College, for some years after retiring from public service.
