U.S. Congressman, Vermont Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Harvard College in 1790, moved to Vermont, in 1791, founded the town of Craftsbury and was town clerk. He was a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1796, 1800-03, 05), clerk of the house, (1798-99) and register of probate, (1796-1815). He also was assistant judge of the Orleans County Court, (1800-10, 25-28), a member of the Vermont State Council, (1809-13) and chief judge of the Orleans County Court, (1810-16). In 1817, he was elected as a Whig to the Fifteenth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1825. After leaving office, he was again a member of the Vermont State Council, (1825-26) and was elected as a Whig the 12th Governor of Vermont, serving (1828-31). After his term, he was clerk of Orleans County Vermont, (1836-39) and elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Samuel Prentiss, serving (1842-43). Not a candidate for reelection, he retired to his farm until his death at age 85.
