U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1801 and commenced to practice law in Washington, Pennsylvania. He was appointed deputy district attorney of Butler County, in 1803 and was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1816-21). In 1829, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1933. After leaving Congress, he practiced law and was Pennsylvania State Treasurer from 1841, until his death at age 65. Congressman Alfred Gilmore was his son.
