Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company D, 2d Wisconsin Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13, 1862. His citation reads "Conspicuous gallantry in battle in which he was severely wounded. While serving as connoneer he manned the positions fo fallen gunners."
