Joseph Fields Alewine was the son of Ephraim (b. abt. 1794) and Hanna (b. abt 1805) Alewine.

Fields was twice married. His first wife was Mary Ann Banister (1843-1891). They married about 1867 and had seven children - two boys and five girls. After Mary Ann's death he married Valentia C. McCarty, nie Garrett, (1849-1931) later that year. She had a daughter, Marietta,(1882-1904) by her previous marriage. Around 1893 they moved to Augusta, GA where daughters Marietta and Mattie worked at the Sibley Cotton Mill.

Obituary, Augusta Chronicle, February 17, 1915, p.3:
"Mr. J. T.(sic) Alewine died yesterday morning at his home near Blythe, Ga., and the funeral service will be held today at 11 a. m. at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. William Thrift, 1813 Broad Street. Internment will be in West View Cemetery. Rev. Thomas Walker will officiate.
The deceased was in the 65th year of age. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. E. C. Alewine: two sons, James A. and John A. Alewine of Anderson, S. C., and three daughters, Mrs. M. P. Whitaker, Mrs. William Thrift and Mrs. Albert L. Faulkner of Augusta."
