U.S. Congressman. Born in Calais, Maine, he attended Washington Academy, graduated from Bowdoin College, in 1837, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Calais, Maine, in 1840. He was Mayor of Calais, (1852-53) and a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1858-60). In 1861, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1869. An unsuccessful candidate for election, he was a member of the Maine State House of Representatives, (1870-71) and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 69 in Calais, Maine.
