Dovie A. Bailey, 94, Cedar Vale, formerly of Harper, Kan., died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital in Cedar Vale, Kan.

Mrs. Bailey was born Jan. 19, 1911, at Japton, Ark., one of nine children born to Joshua and Allie Harriman Foster.

As a child, Dovie moved with the rest of her family to Grenola and Cedar Vale. She worked at Boeing in Wichita during the War. She also learned the florist trade and worked at several floral shops.

Dovie was married to Merle Casebolt until his death. In 1958, she married John D. Baker, a widower with five children, three of them still living at home. They moved to Harper in 1959, where she owned and operated the Harper Floral and Greenhouse until she sold it in 1960. She then operated the D&M Café in Harper for the next 15 years.

After John D. retired from Sinclair Oil Company, Dovie started a ceramic shop in her home, where she gave lessons, sold and fired ceramics.

When John D. died on Oct. 1, 1979, after 21 years of marnage, Doyle moved to Village East for a couple of years before moving to Portland, Ore. to be near her sister Effie and family. While living in Portland, she met and married Fred Bailey in December 1984. They bought an RV and spent several years traveling and visiting relatives. Fred died March 9, 1998.

Dovie moved back to the Cedar Vale Hospital and assisted living center to be close to her brothers and their families and her beloved nieces, Betty Lucille and Barbara Louise Olivier. During this time, Dovie's brothers, Olin, Earl, Jess, Emerson, Doyle and her niece Barbara Louise all died.

Dovie was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 187, Rebekah's and American Legion Auxiliary and the Chicaskia Baptist Church in Harper.

Dovie is survived by her relatives and step-children: Gene Baker and his wife, Helen, Spokane Wash., Lena Houser, Vorane Tenn., Gary Baker and his wife, Mary, Harper, Kan., Tommy Baker and his wife, Kathleen, Snyder, Texas, and Linda Coykendall and her husband, Jon, Rago, Kan.; 13 step grandchildren; 23 step great grandchildren; and six step great great grandchildren; her niece, Betty Lucille Olivier, Cedar Vale, Kan.; and many other nieces and nephews and friends.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Harper Cemetery, with the Rev. Don Swender officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Care of Kansas in Winfield and sent in care of the funeral home. Elliott Funeral Home, 1406 Ash, Harper, KS 67058 was in charge of arrangements.
