Roman Catholic Pope. He served as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from 1740 to 1758. Born Prospero Lambertini in Bologna, Italy in 1675, he is considered to be the greatest scholar to be Pope. Benedict XIV was crowned Pope at the Vatican on Aug. 22, 1740. He is described as a man of great intellect and vast culture. He was also a very balanced person and admirer of the arts. These qualities made everyone appreciate him. As Pope, Benedict XIV made maximum use of the art of mediation. He faced the problem of the Enlightenment and the absolutism. He also restored the Colosseum in Rome. Benedict XIV died on May 3, 1758 and is interred in St. Peters.
