Starting at age 13, he worked for the Somerset (Perry Co., OH) Post for four years, then the Zanesville Courier for a year. He attended Ohio Wesleyan for 9 months.

He went to Huntington, Ind., with his father in June 1848, where they brought out the first issue of the Indiana Herald on July 4. Until he became of age, the father's name also appeared on the masthead. He dropped the paper to become postmaster in 1865, returning to it in 1875. He went to Prescott, Ariz., Feb. 1883 and served as receiver of the federal land office for 15 months. He died at Huntington, Oct 18, 1902.
