Frank L. Stramler passed away June 10, 2011 from a heart attack in Eugene, Oregon. Frank had traveled to Eugene to see his grandson, Jackson graduate from high school and say "Bon Voyage" to his granddaughter Andrea who is going to Saarbr?cken, Germany for a year to participate in the Congress-Budestag Youth Exchange Program for young Professionals. Full Military Honors will be held for Frank on July 15, 2011 at 10 :00am at the Bakersfield National Cemetery located at 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin, California. Frank was the youngest son of Allan A. and Clara B. Stramler and was 86 years old. Frank grew up in east Bakersfield and attended a number of elementary schools on the east side. In 1937 he and his parents moved to Lancaster, Ca. where his father was employed as a railroad engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Frank attended Grammar school and graduated from Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, then moved back to Bakersfield where he worked on the Lerdo Farms. During WWII, Frank served with the United States Marine Corp (USMC) in the South Pacific and China. After World War II he joined his oldest Brother Allen A. (Bud) Stramler Jr. in the farming business and farmed at Wheeler Ridge, Antelope Valley, Wasco, and Mc Farland. During those years and until 1958 Frank served many hours as a Reserve and Extra Help Deputy Sheriff. In 1953 he left farming and became a Carpenter. In 1957, Frank was employed by Kern County in the Parks and Recreation Department beginning his employment at Lake Isabella as a Lake Patrolman. In 1959, Frank was selected as the Park Supervisor for Hart Memorial Park and Lake Ming. He and his family lived at Hart Park for nine years. In 1965, Frank was selected to be the Departments Superintendent and served in that capacity until the Death of Park Director Herb Evans. Frank was then selected as Director of the Kern County Parks and Recreation Department on July 28, 1968. During his watch as Director, numerous park and recreation facilities were constructed such as The Buena Vista Recreation area, Lake Ming Camp ground, Stramler Picnic Area, Belle Terrace Park, McFarland East Park, and picnic areas at Lake Wollomes, and North Edwards Park. He also worked closely with the Kern County Soccer Foundation in constructing the Kern County Soccer Park. Frank served as the President of the California State County Park Directors Association and the National County Parks Association. He was a member of the Elks Lodge of Bakersfield, North of the River Lions Club and Sirs of Bakersfield. Frank was married to Marion Adams who preceded him in death in 2001. They were married 53 years. Marion and Frank traveled through out the US, Canada, and Alaska in their motor home and with friends in various motor home groups. Frank is survived by his dearest friends Bernice Joyner and Joanne Pearce, his four children; Michael Stramler, Garnett Goodvin-Besenthal, William (Billy) & wife Barbara Stramler, & Sybil Gebhard. Grandchildren; Stephen Del Tour, Eric Goodvin, Arthur Edmond (Eddie) Besenthal, Wendy Besenthal-Flowers & husband Steve, Megan Gebhard-Duvall & husband Jake, Matthew Gebhard, Andrea Stramler , Jackson Stramler, Joseph (Joey) Stramler, Brenna Stramler, and Kalie Rose Stramler. The family plans to construct and dedicate a Memorial Garden at the "Frank L. Stramler Group Picnic Area" in honor of Frank's love of people and nature. A dedication service will be held at a later date.
