Francis Crawford is buried in unmarked grave next to his second wife Martha Joiner. They were married 15 May 1839 in Nash County, North Carolina. His first wife was Elizabeth Land to whom he was married on 11 Dec 1834 in Haywood County, North Carolina. She Died circa 1838 in the same County. Because of his sons John and William enlisting in the Union Army,Francis was taken from his home and murderd in 1864 by persons claiming to be members of General Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate Calvary, who were in the area at that time. However, they were more than likely members of one of the many outlaw gangs of either Confederate or Union sympthay that roamed in the area at that time since they demanded and were paid a $200 ransom for his release. They killed him and returned his mutilated body to his widow.
