Albers was a gunner on A-20B Havoc #41-3333, assigned to the 12th Air Force, 47th Bombardment Group, 97th Bombardment Squadron. They took off from Vincenzo Italy on a bombing mission against gun positions near Carpinone. On August 7, 1943, coming off the bomb run they were hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire and the plane erupted into flames. Albers was able to parachute to safety, the pilot and other gunner were killed.

The crew had flown 35 missions over Tunisia, Italy, Sicily and Lampedusa.
