He was U.S. Vice Consul in Marseille, 1939-41; Buenos Aires, 1941-43; along with Varian Fry helped approximately 2,500 - 4,000 Jews escape the Nazis in 1940-41. A U.S. postage stamp was issued in his honor in 2006. Died in Salem, New London County, Conn., January 12, 1988
