Charles Gordon Cooper was born on January 27, 1823, in Washington County, Ohio. He grew up on a farm in Washington County before coming to Iowa. He homesteaded in Marion County, Iowa, in 1851, and owned 135 acres.

Charles married his 1st wife, Hannah Maria Getchell, on February 27, 1848. They had 7 children together. Their son, William, was born in 1851 and died in 1860 in Ohio. Not much is known about him.

After Hannah's death, Charles married widow Mary Ella Edwards Waller on October 28, 1862, in Marion County, Iowa. They had 8 children together.

Charles Gordon Cooper died on July 17, 1885, in Harvey, Iowa. He is survived by his wife Mary Ella Cooper and his children. He was predeceased by his first wife, Hannah Maria Cooper, and his son, William.
